Activity 15 from Being You: A Girl's Guide to Mindfulness
Choose the answer that seems most
like how you would react in each situation.
Scenario
My Own Worst Frenemy
My Own Best Friend
How would you react if you tripped and fell in the
hallway?
I would feel so ashamed that I never want to go back to
school. I would keep reminding myself how clumsy I am.
I would feel embarrassed, but mostly I would feel glad
I didn’t seriously injure myself.
How would you react if you got a low score on a test or
you didn’t win a competition?
I would feel that I never get anything right.
I would feel disappointed.
How do you usually react when you look in the mirror?
I usually wish I were prettier. I hate my nose. It’s
impossible to do anything with my hair. Is that another pimple?
I may not look like a supermodel, but I still like
myself.
How might you react if you found out that someone you
have a crush on isn’t attracted to you?
Nobody loves me. I’m such an idiot for even thinking
anybody would be attracted to me.
That’s too bad, but I bet there’s somebody else who’s
attracted to me. And there are a lot of people who like me and care about me.
If you
chose most of the answers in the “My Own Best Friend” column, that means you
treat yourself the way you’d treat somebody you care about. If you circled most
of the answers in the “My Own Worst Frenemy” column, that means you’re awfully
hard on yourself. Remember that nobody’s perfect, and being a teen can be
really challenging. You’ll feel a lot better if you talk to yourself in a more
loving and supportive way.
